Audio Story - Marketing Wildfire Mitigation via Volunteerism
I decided to make a radio advertisement for a volunteer firefighting program because of fire season kicking into full swing in the Pacific Northwest and the increasing need for bodies to help with suppression and protection. There is a common misconception that firefighters only fight fire; however, just like in the military, a library of other jobs is available. Examples include bookkeeping, delivering resources to camps, communications, and helping set up and take down the camps the firefighters live at for the duration of an event. I began writing my thoughts on a brainstorming page to see where my thoughts would go. Then, I organized the word vomit into a drafted script. After developing my script, I began playing around with tone and background music to add engaging effects. It took me a few tries to work through the script smoothly. It was much easier to edit the language after I heard how it sounded out loud. From there, I imputed the raw audio to Audition to edit. I trimmed down the blank space and cut out a few filler words. I also played with the fading in/out tools to add the background music. I found a lot of great (and free!) sound clips through QuickSounds.
For my final version of the radio advertisement, I utilized helpful feedback from my peers to create a polished and engaging recording. I increased the background fade-out in the beginning and fade-in at the end. I also re-recorded the script to implement tone improvements and a smoother flow. I learned a great deal about rhythm and how to pace your tone and words to capture a story in a short amount of time.
